CadCamCloud vs SwissTransfer

CadCamCloud vs SwissTransfer for dental labs

SwissTransfer is the privacy-friendly transfer favoured by European dentists attentive to GDPR. It remains, however, a transfer: for a lab the structured archive is irreplaceable.

SwissTransfer, developed by Infomaniak, has in recent years become the file transfer of reference for numerous privacy-conscious European professionals. Free of charge, without account, hosting exclusively Swiss, 50 GB per transfer, retention up to thirty days: a technically very solid offering that has gained ground among Italian and Swiss dentists attentive to GDPR.

It nonetheless remains a transfer service: the intended use is sending a file to a recipient, not managing the order workflow of a lab. The question is not whether SwissTransfer is a good service — it is. The question is whether it is the tool appropriate to what a lab must perform daily.

Commercial model

SwissTransfer is entirely free of charge, with no paid plans. It is funded within the Infomaniak ecosystem (hosting, kSuite cloud). The offering is simple and generous: 50 GB per transfer, maximum thirty-day retention, no account requirement.

CadCamCloud has a free Basic plan with 20 GB (with advertising in the portal), then Pro €12/month annual (€15 monthly) with 75 GB, and Premium €29-39/month. The difference is not the price — both provide a free-of-charge option: SwissTransfer is free for episodic transfers, CadCamCloud is free for commencing a permanent practice-lab flow. The difference is what each provides, not what each costs.

Technical limits and retention

SwissTransfer permits 50 GB per transfer, a generous value. Maximum retention is thirty days, after which the file is deleted definitively. There is no organisation, search, filter: each transfer is an isolated event identified by a link.

For a lab receiving fifty STLs per month, after twelve months access to six hundred distinct expired links is required. CadCamCloud resolves the problem structurally: every submission received flows into the lab archive, organised by practice, patient, type, status. Retention is ten medico-legal years, not thirty days.

Compliance and privacy

SwissTransfer is hosted exclusively in Switzerland (Infomaniak, Swiss green datacentres). Switzerland is considered an adequate country by the European Commission for the transfer of personal data, and is therefore GDPR-compatible. End-to-end encryption optional with user-side password.

CadCamCloud is hosted in the European Union (Hetzner DE, Wasabi EU). It generates an immutable PDF/A for each submission according to ISO 19005 standard and AGID Guidelines, with public verification QR. Retention is explicitly ten medico-legal years. It is not solely encryption: it is a structured auditable archive.

Workflow and integration

SwissTransfer is pure transfer. It has no user account, no forms, no statuses, no public API. By design — and it is a legitimate choice — it is designed for maximum simplicity of the single transfer event.

CadCamCloud proceeds from the order: the lab configures a form for each work item type, practices upload within structured forms, each file has its own tracked status. REST API with complete OpenAPI, signed webhooks to integrate the lab management system.

Branding and extensibility

SwissTransfer provides no white-label. The link is swisstransfer.com, the interface is SwissTransfer.

CadCamCloud Premium provides a public portal under your domain (lab.cadcamcloud.net or, on Enterprise, full domain of the lab). Logo, colours, price list, gallery of your work. For the practices it is the portal of your lab.

When SwissTransfer is the appropriate choice

  • Sending a large file on an occasional basis to a professional recipient (colleague, consultant, supplier).
  • Privacy-conscious free transfers when an archive is not required.
  • Small practices with occasional flows and few already established reference labs.
  • Cases in which Swiss residency of the data constitutes a specific requirement (CH clientele).

When CadCamCloud is preferable

  • A continuous flow of submissions from multiple practices must be managed and tracked.
  • Each submission must be organised by practice, patient, type, status.
  • The practice must view in real time the status of its work item, without the need for direct communication.
  • An immutable PDF/A is required for each order, archived for ten years with public verification.
  • Integration of submissions into the management system via signed webhooks is desired.

Frequently asked questions

Is SwissTransfer effectively more privacy-friendly than EU services such as CadCamCloud?

Swiss hosting offers certain additional guarantees under Swiss data protection law. For healthcare data of Italian patients, however, the applicable law is GDPR + Italian Privacy Code, and Swiss hosting adds no specific guarantees compared to EU hosting. CadCamCloud Hetzner DE is GDPR-by-design, not GDPR-compatible-by-virtue-of-adequate-country.

Is it possible to use SwissTransfer to archive the lab cases?

No, maximum retention is thirty days. SwissTransfer is designed for transfer, not for archive. For the ten-year medico-legal retention required by MDR a structured archive tool is required.

Client practices prefer SwissTransfer as it is free and account-less. How may the transition be facilitated?

The CadCamCloud account is free for the practices and onboarding requires a few minutes. The advantage for them is concrete: complete history of submissions always accessible, real-time status of work items, no link expiry. Once the branded portal of your lab is viewed, initial friction tends to diminish.

Is CadCamCloud available in Swiss/for Swiss clientele?

The interface is available in Italian, English, French, German and Spanish. Hosting is in EU datacentres (Germany) — external to Switzerland, yet in territory considered adequate by Swiss data protection law. For exclusively Swiss clientele with strict CH residency requirements, this is assessable in an Enterprise clause.

Is it possible to use both: SwissTransfer for episodic cases and CadCamCloud for the ordinary flow?

Without reservation. They are distinct tools and may be used in parallel without interference. Numerous labs retain SwissTransfer for occasional non-clinical cases, and utilise CadCamCloud for the structured flow of orders from practices.
