WeTransfer is excellent for the purpose for which it was conceived. For those producing custom-made medical devices, a tool of a different category is required.
WeTransfer is probably the most widely recognised file transfer service internationally, and for a valid reason: opening the site, dragging a file, obtaining a link within thirty seconds without an account constitutes a user experience that is difficult to equal. For sending an intraoral scan on an occasional basis to a colleague, it is perfectly adequate.
For a dental lab receiving one hundred files a week from twelve different practices, which must demonstrate pursuant to MDR 2017/745 who sent what and when — six months, two years, ten years later — the perspective changes. Not because WeTransfer performs its function poorly, but because its function is of a different nature.

WeTransfer offers a free tier with 3 GB per file and ten transfers per month, sufficient for a dentist with occasional use. The Pro plan at approximately €14/month raises the limit to 200 GB per transfer and includes annual retention, customisable branding and analytics.
CadCamCloud's Pro plan starts at €12/month annual (€15 monthly) with 75 GB included — below WeTransfer Pro as a base price. The useful comparison, however, does not concern the two numeric values: in exchange you obtain forms configurable per work item type, ten-year archive, immutable PDF/A for each submission and REST API with signed webhooks. CadCamCloud is not a less expensive file-sharing tool, it is a tool of a different category. The price merely constitutes a convenient point of entry.
On WeTransfer free, files expire within seven days; on Pro within one year. This is the fundamental pattern: WeTransfer is a transit channel, not an archive. When the link expires, the file is no longer available — not even for the sender.
CadCamCloud provides for no expiry. The default retention is ten years, in line with the requirement MDR places upon the manufacturer of custom-made medical devices. The practice may always access the portal and view the complete history of its submissions; the lab may reconstruct a case from 2019 with the same ease with which it opens a submission from the same morning.
WeTransfer is GDPR-compliant and has both European and US datacentres; routing depends on the user's region. For most consumer uses it proves adequate.
For healthcare data, a level of guarantee superior to base GDPR is required: a structured archive enabling response to a request from the healthcare authority is required. CadCamCloud generates for each submission a PDF/A — ISO 19005 standard, conformant with AGID Guidelines — comprising client record, completed form, file checksums, timestamp and unique UUID. The document is immutable post-submission, retained for ten years, and a QR refers to a public verification page accessible without authentication. Hosting exclusively in EU datacentres.
WeTransfer enables the sending of files. What is received is a list of files. Their content, the patient of reference, the work item type, the expected deadline: such information must be communicated separately, via other channels.
CadCamCloud proceeds from the opposite premise: each submission is structured around a form configured by the lab for the specific work item type. The practice may not submit an inlay case without the shade, may not submit a partial denture without the antagonist, may not omit patient details. The lab receives validated data, not orphan files to be integrated via WhatsApp.

WeTransfer Pro enables customisation of the download page with logo and background image. This constitutes a cosmetic layer above the standard workflow.
CadCamCloud Premium provides a complete public portal under your domain (lab.cadcamcloud.net or, on Enterprise, lab.yourdomain.com), with your logo, your colours, your price list, your gallery. For the practices it is not a third-party service: it is the portal of your lab.

WeTransfer is generically GDPR-compliant. For healthcare data (special category under Art. 9 GDPR) GDPR compliance alone is not sufficient: respect for the Italian Privacy Code on retention is also required and, for custom-made medical devices, the ten-year retention provided by MDR 2017/745. WeTransfer is not designed for such retention.
Technically yes, retention is one year. In practice one year proves insufficient for a custom-made medical device, for which documentation must be retained ten years from the production lot. Furthermore, the search/organisational model of WeTransfer (flat list of transfers) is not conceived for search by patient, by type, by status.
For the practice↔lab flow, yes. For different purposes (sending a file to the accountant, sharing non-clinical internal material) CadCamCloud proves over-dimensioned — WeTransfer is preferable. The two tools may coexist without interference.
The CadCamCloud Pro plan starts at €12/month annual (€15 monthly), within the same range as WeTransfer Pro €14. Migration entails no file import from the previous system (WeTransfer does not archive them beyond retention): the new flow commences from day one.
Yes, although it is free for the practices and onboarding is guided. For the lab it constitutes an advantage: each submission is linked to an identified practice, not to an anonymous sender via link. For the practice it constitutes an advantage: it has the history of its own submissions always accessible.
